The Gaucho's Way of Life:

Many years ago gauchos lived on horseback and traveled widely. The primary reputation of the gaucho, was that of a horseman, and this was well deserved. It was said that when a gaucho was without his horse he was without legs. Almost all his daily chores, from bathing to hunting were conducted from atop hi steed.

Some gauchos made their living by selling cattle's hides and tallow in exchange for tobacco, rum and Mate Tea; gauchos were said to be so fanatic to this tea that they would rather have gone without their beef. The Yerba Mate was served in a Gourd and sipped in through a silver straw called a Bombilla.

The Doma is one of the most characteristic things done in the Campo, this special feature is used to measure the skill of the horse riders on wild horses. Nowdays is a public show where any volunteer may participate in different categories, according to the tacks that put over the animal: bareback, with saddlecloth and saddle cinch.

Their existence was fairly humble, with few needs. Most did not possess much beyond a horse, a saddle, a poncho and a knife. Gaucho's daily life consisted of caring for their herds of cattle, and catching wild cattle. The work was not terribly rigorous, they were left with extra time on their hands, and much of this was spent singing(Payadas), drinking and some times gambling on horse races or playing Taba.

This unwise combination of activities often led to another favorite pastime: the knife fight.  The gaucho's weapons were a simple knife (Facon) and a Boleadora, which was stones bound with leather strips, which he used also for hunting...
